October Is Almost Over, but I’m Still Celebrating!
If you know me, you know my birthday is more than a one-day celebration. October is my birthday month, and yes, I celebrate all month long! My birthday may be October 4, but I believe there is enough joy, gratitude, and life to celebrate all the way through October 31.
Now that the month is almost over, I’m holding on to every bit of it. Don’t rush me into November just yet—I still have some celebrating to do!
For me, celebrating means more than cake, gifts, or getting dressed up, although I certainly enjoy those things. It means recognizing the blessing of being here. Another birthday is another opportunity to thank God for His goodness, His protection, and the grace that has carried me through another year.
Looking back on my life, I see so many reasons to be grateful. Some seasons stretched my faith. Others brought joy I never could have planned. Through every chapter, God has continued to give me reasons to smile and the strength to keep moving forward.
That deserves more than a passing thank-you.
So throughout October, I make room for joy. Sometimes that looks like spending time with people I love. Sometimes it means treating myself, taking a picture, enjoying a good meal, or simply pausing to say, “Lord, thank You for another day.”
As women, we can get so busy caring for everyone else that we forget to celebrate ourselves. We remember the birthdays, plan the gatherings, encourage our families, and show up for our communities. This month reminds me to receive some of that same love and care.
I don’t need everything in my life to be perfect to celebrate it. I’m still waiting to see some prayers answered and working toward dreams. But there is also so much goodness right here, in this season, that I don’t want to overlook.
As October comes to a close, I’m carrying that gratitude with me. I’m looking forward to more laughter, meaningful moments, and opportunities to walk in the purpose God has given me. There is still room to grow, something new to learn, and so much life to enjoy.
If your birthday is coming up, give yourself permission to celebrate in a way that makes you happy. Take the picture. Wear the outfit. Gather with the people you love. Thank God for how far you’ve come.
And if you see me still celebrating these last few days of October, just smile and celebrate with me.
October isn’t over yet—and neither is my birthday celebration!

With love and gratitude, Dr. Jeri B. Shannon
